As I mentioned, there is a lot of valuable information that is provided in particular subreddits. Such ones include r/MechanicAdvice or r/Wicked_Edge where people with extensive experience in a particular subject can provide readers with helpful information for free.

In my opinion, subreddits are superior to many blogs or websites because the forum-esque format of the site allows for interaction and further discussion.

Creating Blog Traffic

Because of Reddit's popularity and user generated content, it is a great means of driving traffic to your blog. I don't use Reddit to drive traffic to this site, but I have started to use it for Screw You Acne!

If you're going to do this, don't spam your content. Rather, make as many helpful posts as possible and if the situation arises where it would be appropriate to link to your site's content, do it.

Places like Reddit via subreddits allow people with similar ideas and beliefs to congregate and feel 'at home'. It's important for people to have friends in real life and spend most of their time off their computer screen, however, online communities do have their place for certain individuals.

If you find yourself browsing Reddit, and you’re not doing it with the purpose of finding specific information on a topic, than you’re there for fun. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Another aspect of Reddit I find problematic are the visitors themselves. While you can congregate in places like r/TheRedPill, knowing the majority of people who visit that site are pasty, liberal dorks, is unnerving.

Censorship and Bias

I think Reddit does a good job of being transparent for the most part. It allows people to discuss numerous topics, some borderline illegal. However, many major subreddits like r/politics are heavily biased.

Remember, all content is voted on and more 'liked' posts get upvoted. So in r/politics, someone with a conservative viewpoint is going to have their post disappear to the depths of the subreddit, whereas someone who posts a liberal viewpoint will likely get upvoted by their peers.

All subreddits are controlled by the people who created the subreddit. While they should have the right to decide what content they want to appear on their subreddit, it can be problematic as:

There are a ton of porn subreddits, with every kind of freaky fetish you can imagine. In addition to that, you have subreddits like the aforementioned r/WTF which consists of posts that make you say, 'What the Fuck?'

Sure, you'll get a kick out of looking at it a few times, but seriously, what value does this provide? Why are millions of people encouraging others to share the fucked up stuff they see and experience.

If you're going to use Reddit, or similar sites, make sure that you're using it for the purposes listed under 'The Good':

  1. Finding insightful information from experienced individuals,
  2. Building traffic to your blog, website, or product (without being a spammy douche), or
  3. Surrounding yourself with like minded individuals on topics that matter

If you're using it for other purposes, again, think about it. But hey, this is just one man's opinion. 174 million unique visitors can't be wrong... or can they?

For many forward-looking students still chugging through academia in the search of something to love, gaming degrees can seem like the holy grail, as you get to learn about games on the path to actually making them. The truth is the industry is a much rougher place than it lets on, and some big names in the industry, including Sony, have spoken out against these academic programs.

Having attended the University of Waterloo for Computer Science, I studied alongside many who had aspirations of developing games, others who abandoned university altogether to move to trade schools, and a select few who have started to enter the industry at home and abroad with companies like Microsoft, Electronic Arts, and Bioware.

Anecdotally, it has become painfully clear that many of these trade schools are degree mills designed specifically to reap the rewards of offering naive students what amounts to a mirage. This isn't just my own perception; nearly every developer I've talked to on the matter has said that a general computer science (or fine art, digital media, or what have you) degree from a good university is worth infinitely more than a specialized trade school degree. A few lucky souls may wind up producing art or doing programming for projects directly out of trade school, but for the vast majority, unemployment at the hands of a limited skill set will be the unfortunate reality.

For the most part, American video game trade schools such as DigiPen and Fullsail are more productive than the Canadian and European counterparts, but when it comes to post-secondary study, absorbing as much broad knowledge and not limiting yourself to a single pursuit is always the better strategy for most. When you're throwing down big bucks and potentially going into debt for that piece of paper, you want to make sure it's as valuable and flexible as possible coming out the other end. Should you want something more specific, pursue it after you've got a good amount of background knowledge and skills.
